Backyard Habitat Ambassador Training 4/14/18

Habitat Ambassadors are volunteers trained by the National Wildlife Federation to educate their community about the importance of wildlife habitat. Ambassadors show homeowners and others small changes they can make to benefit local wildlife and interact with the community at events. If you enjoy gardening, talking to people, and helping others learn how to make a difference, this opportunity is for you!

Dec. 12th program: Winter-Sowing Seeds Outdoors in Milk Jugs

At our December meeting, gardener Jim Kasper will demonstrate this easy method that really works—winter-sowing various seeds outdoors in common plastic jugs. Start your new gardening year now!

At this meeting we will install Club Officers for 2018.

Anyone wishing may bring a non-perishable food item to donate to those in need and a dozen cookies to share!

“Down the Garden Path” 10/10 – Lake View Cemetery Horticulturalist, Robin Cannon

Meeting program: October 10th, 2017  at 7 PM

Robin Cannon grew up in Chesterland, Ohio and graduated from West Geauga High School. She attended Kent State University and has her bachelors degree in Horticulture with a focus in Landscape Design. She has been coming to Lake View since she was a child and now has made Lake View her home. The first day on the job, was during the Polar Vortex of 2014 and it was -30 degrees. Everyone was surprised she showed up. Robin has shown her dedication to Lake View every day since then. Part of Robin’s job is to bring together the classic design of this stately garden cemetery and the newer varieties of plant material in a way that continues the aesthetic of Lake View into the next 100 years. She is thrilled to be added to the list of talented workers making a lasting impact on these
beautiful grounds. Robin gives tours throughout the year focusing on plant characteristics that are unique, special blooms, plant forms and colors. Robin can be found out on the grounds during every season no matter the weather.

“Stuff the Bus!” at Picnic in the Park

The City of Brooklyn and Brooklyn City Schools will hold a Stuff the Bus event during the Chamber of Commerce’s Picnic in the Park. The Picnic in the Park is Aug. 19th from 1-8:30 p.m. [ ]

There will be a Brooklyn City school bus to stuff with NEW basic school supplies (paper, pencils, pens, rulers, folders, backpacks, glue, crayons, notebooks, etc.) Also various NEW small playground items (jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, balls, etc.)

It’s tax-free weekend — a good time to add a few extra items to your shopping bag and save for this event.

Picnic in the Park Aug. 19th

Visit the Laurel Garden Club booth at the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Picnic in the Park on Saturday, August 19th, 2017.  This free, family-friendly event runs from 1 – 8:30 p.m.  and features live entertainment, children’s activities, exhibitors, corn hole, food trucks, beer/wine, and a FIREWORKS show at dusk! Veterans Memorial Park, behind Brooklyn City Hall. See FLYER.

Home Depot will present a kids’ workshop.
Nature Tracks mobile classroom 1-5 p.m.
Cornhole tournament at 3 p.m., with cash prizes.
Time Warp Band performs from 2-6 p.m.
Fast Lane Eagles tribute band performs from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Fireworks show at dusk.
Children area with games and a bounce house.
Food trucks: The Cedar Grill, Hofbrauhaus Cleveland, The Float Factory, Nelly Belly Applewood Fired Pizza,  Sugar High Food Truck, and Snowie (snow cone fun).
Raffle baskets and 50/50 raffle.

 

Memorial Day – Blue Star Memorial Marker & Gold Star By-Way Marker Dedication Ceremony

It was a beautiful day and a lovely ceremony. Thanks to everyone who made it possible. Remember to patronize our local business donors. If you were not able to attend, please stop by to see the markers at the Veterans Monument at Memorial Park. Above all, heartfelt thanks to all who have served our country in the armed forces and to all their families.
